Description

Anterior to the elbow joint, the cubital (antecubital) fossa appears as a triangular depression bounded laterally by brachioradialis and medially by pronator teres, with an inferior apex that continues into the proximal forearm. Superficial tissues typically reveal the median cubital vein crossing obliquely between the cephalic and basilic veins, with the bicipital aponeurosis (lacertus fibrosus) fanning medially deep to the venous plane. Deep to that aponeurosis lie the brachial artery and its bifurcation into radial and ulnar arteries, while the median nerve tracks medial to the artery and the biceps brachii tendon descends centrally to its insertion on the radial tuberosity. This is the chelidon. Venipuncture and IV cannulation most often target the median cubital vein, and this view clarifies why: it sits superficial and relatively fixed by perforating veins, while the bicipital aponeurosis forms a protective roof over the brachial artery and median nerve. Missed placement matters. An inadvertent arterial puncture in the antecubital fossa can complicate blood draws and contrast injection, and median nerve irritation is a known cause of post-phlebotomy paresthesia; the illustration also supports teaching safe tourniquet placement and palpation of the brachial pulse just medial to the biceps tendon.
