Description
Seen from the anterior aspect, the female epicranium is organized around the frontal belly of the occipitofrontalis (frontalis), whose vertically oriented fibers blend superiorly into the galea aponeurotica and inferiorly into the skin and subcutaneous tissue of the forehead and eyebrows. Laterally, the frontalis transitions toward the temporoparietalis region over the temporal fossa, where the epicranial aponeurosis continues as a tense sheet superficial to the temporal fascia. The scalp envelope is implied as the layered complex of skin, dense connective tissue, and the aponeurotic plane that allows the forehead to move as a unit. Clear midline symmetry. Functionally, this anterior view matters because the frontalis is the primary elevator of the brows, opposing the orbicularis oculi and corrugator supercilii that drive brow depression and glabellar furrowing. Surgeons plan brow-lift and forehead flap incisions with the galea in mind, since undermining in the subgaleal plane reduces bleeding while protecting deeper neurovascular structures; staying superficial reduces risk to the frontal branch of the facial nerve as it crosses the zygomatic arch into the temporoparietal fascia. Clinicians also use this anatomy when placing botulinum toxin for frontalis overactivity, where injection height and laterality determine whether brow ptosis or an exaggerated lateral brow occurs. Suitable for head and neck anatomy teaching, plastic surgery and dermatologic surgery references, and patient-facing materials explaining forehead motion, scalp dissection planes, or management of scalp lacerations and subgaleal hematoma. It also supports figure-based exam questions that contrast frontalis action with brow depressors and map the epicranial aponeurosis as a landmark.
