Description
Positioned on the posterolateral skull, the mastoid process of the temporal bone is shown in relation to the adjacent external acoustic meatus and the posterior root of the zygomatic process, with the auricular region lying lateral and the cranial base superior. From an anterior perspective, the mastoid surface sits posterior to the mandibular fossa and inferior to the squamous temporal bone, while the styloid region projects anteroinferiorly toward the upper neck. The sternocleidomastoid insertion occupies the lateral aspect of the mastoid process, and the digastric groove lies more medial and inferior. Clear bony landmarks. Orientation in the mastoid region matters because it is the surgical corridor for common otologic procedures, where surface anatomy guides deeper work around the mastoid air cell system, the tympanomastoid suture line, and the mastoid segment of the facial nerve. Acute otitis media can spread posteriorly to mastoiditis, and the anterolateral mastoid cortex is where tenderness, subperiosteal abscess formation, and surgical drainage are classically discussed. During cortical mastoidectomy and canal wall up or down procedures, keeping the relationship between the external acoustic meatus, mastoid tip, and the expected course of the sigmoid sinus in mind helps prevent hemorrhage and avoid facial nerve injury. Use this anterior view in head and neck anatomy teaching to reinforce temporal bone topography and muscle attachments, and in ENT training materials that explain postauricular approaches, mastoidectomy steps, and the surface landmarks that approximate deeper structures on CT. It also reads well in patient education pieces describing mastoiditis, postauricular incision placement, and expected areas of postoperative swelling.
