Description
Centered on the symphysis menti, the anterior mental region is defined by the soft tissue over the mandibular symphysis, including the mental protuberance and paired mental tubercles that contour the inferior border of the chin. Superiorly, the labiomental sulcus separates the chin pad from the lower lip, where the orbicularis oris blends with the mentalis and the depressor labii inferioris near the midline. Lateral to the midline contour, the mandibular body continues toward the mental foramen region, the exit point of the mental nerve and vessels, although the foramen itself often sits just beyond the most prominent anterior curvature. Skin thickness and subcutaneous fat overlying these landmarks vary by sex and age, shaping the perceived projection and width of the chin. Mental region anatomy matters any time you need to predict where a cutaneous incision, filler plane, or osteotomy will land relative to the mentalis and the mental nerve. Misplacement of a mental nerve block, injury during genioplasty, or traction on the soft tissue attachments can produce lower lip paresthesia, asymmetry, or a characteristic chin ptosis from mentalis dysfunction. Small details count.
