Centered in the anterior oral (buccal) region, the upper and lower lips frame the oral fissure, with the vermilion border transitioning to the perioral skin and the philtrum positioned superiorly in the midline beneath the nasal base. Laterally, the labial commissures mark the junction of the lips and define the corners of the mouth, while the nasolabial folds typically course obliquely toward the upper lip. With the mouth slightly open, the maxillary and mandibular incisors and the marginal gingiva can be appreciated just posterior to the lips, and the labial vestibule lies between the inner lip mucosa and the anterior dental arches. Surface texture, color variation, and symmetry are emphasized. Anterior mouth anatomy is a frequent point of failure in both assessment and illustration, because small asymmetries read as pathology and small omissions erase key clinical landmarks. Precise rendering of the vermilion border, commissures, and perioral skin is central when teaching recognition of herpes labialis along the mucocutaneous junction, angular cheilitis at the commissures, and early actinic cheilitis or squamous cell carcinoma changes on the lower lip, which often presents on sun-exposed vermilion and may be overlooked if the border is not clearly defined.
