Description
Anterior wrist anatomy is presented in anatomical position, with the distal radius lateral (thumb side) and the distal ulna medial, separated by the radioulnar articulation and capped by the ulnar styloid. Proximal carpal bones occupy the space distal to the forearm: the scaphoid and lunate sit laterally and centrally beneath the distal radius, while the triquetrum lies more ulnar with the pisiform on the palmar, ulnar aspect. Distal to this row, the trapezium and trapezoid align on the radial side toward the base of the first and second metacarpals, with the capitate centered and the hamate positioned ulnarly, its hook projecting palmarward. The carpal tunnel region is implied on the volar (anterior) surface, spanning between the scaphoid tubercle and trapezium radially and the pisiform and hook of hamate ulnarly. This orientation matters when you need clean surface-to-deep correlations for common volar wrist problems. Median nerve compression in carpal tunnel syndrome is understood in relation to the flexor retinaculum and the bony boundaries of the tunnel, while tenderness in the anatomic snuffbox often tracks back to the scaphoid just distal to the radial styloid. A clear anterior map also supports safe portal placement and tendon identification in volar approaches and endoscopic releases.
