Centered in the anterior knee, the patella sits within the quadriceps tendon, its apex directed inferiorly toward the patellar ligament and tibial tuberosity. Superior to the patella, the distal femur frames the patellofemoral joint, while the medial and lateral femoral epicondyles and adjacent condylar contours define the proximal margins of the tibiofemoral articulation. Inferiorly, the proximal tibia forms the broad tibial plateau, with the fibular head positioned posterolateral to the lateral tibial condyle and only partly suggested from this perspective. Bony landmarks dominate.
