Description
Oriented to an anterior vantage on the lateral neck, the sternocleidomastoid forms the dominant superficial landmark, running obliquely from the mastoid process to the manubrium and medial clavicle and separating the anterior and posterior cervical triangles. Superficial to it lie skin and platysma, while the submandibular region sits superior and anteromedial, blending toward the inferior border of the mandible and the hyoid level. Deep to the anterior border of sternocleidomastoid, the carotid sheath region is implied, with the common carotid artery medial to the internal jugular vein and the vagus nerve between them, while the infrahyoid strap muscles occupy a more medial plane. An anterior-lateral neck view matters because clinicians navigate this corridor daily, from palpating carotid pulse just medial to sternocleidomastoid to accessing the internal jugular vein for central venous catheter placement while avoiding the carotid artery. Lymph node chains along the jugular vein and in the posterior triangle are a staging map in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, and their relationship to the spinal accessory nerve explains the classic postoperative shoulder droop after neck dissection. Small errors have consequences. Even surface anatomy does. Use this artwork to teach cervical triangles, fascial compartments, and surface landmarks in gross anatomy, ENT, and general surgery courses, or to support atlas plates and journal figures discussing carotid endarterectomy exposure, jugular venipuncture technique, or patterns of cervical lymphadenopathy on ultrasound and CT.
