Description
Anterior thoracic anatomy frames the trachea as it descends in the midline from the laryngeal inlet to the carina, then divides into the right and left main bronchi at the level of the sternal angle. Both lungs are shown within the pleural cavities, with the right lung positioned slightly more inferiorly due to the liver and presenting a speckled, patchy pattern of particle accumulations compared with the smoother-appearing left lung. Proximally, the central airways dominate the composition, while distally the mottled changes extend into the peripheral parenchyma toward the costal margins. Occupational and environmental exposures often leave their signature in this distribution. Inhaled carbonaceous dust, silica, or mixed particulates can deposit along bronchioles and within alveolar macrophages, producing anthracosis or pneumoconiosis patterns that clinicians correlate with chronic cough, progressive dyspnea, and restrictive physiology, and that radiologists may describe as patchy increased density, nodularity, or upper-lobe predominant change depending on the agent. A clear anterior relationship between trachea, bronchi, and lung fields also supports teaching airway branching and why aspirated material more often tracks into the wider, more vertical right main bronchus.
