Description

Anterior inspection of the male auricle centers on the antitragus, a small cartilaginous eminence on the inferoposterior margin of the concha that projects medially toward the external acoustic meatus. Opposing it across the intertragic notch sits the tragus, positioned more anteriorly and slightly superiorly, while the lobule lies inferior to both as a noncartilaginous continuation of the pinna. The helix frames the lateral rim, and the antihelix forms a medial ridge that curves superiorly behind the conchal bowl. Small structure, clear landmarks. Seeing the antitragus from the front matters when you need orientation in the conchal region, because minor differences in tragal and antitragal contour can shift where the intertragic notch and conchal cartilage sit relative to the meatal opening and the root of the helix. This is the neighborhood used for placement of auricular devices and for planning incisions in otoplasty, where preserving conchal cartilage and avoiding conspicuous anterior irregularities drives both function and cosmesis. It also supports teaching external ear surface anatomy that clinicians use when describing lesions, lacerations, or perichondritis around the concha and antitragal fold. Use this image for head and neck anatomy teaching, ENT exam guides, and surgical atlases that need a clean anterior reference for pinna landmarks, including the antitragus-tragus relationship and the intertragic notch. It also fits dermatology and wound-care publications when charting lesion location on the external ear with consistent terminology. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
