Description

Dorsal structures of the male foot are presented from an anterior viewpoint, with the hallux positioned medially and the fifth digit laterally along the digital rays. The instep forms a smooth medial arch from the calcaneus posteriorly toward the first metatarsal and proximal phalanx anteriorly, while the lateral border runs straighter toward the fifth metatarsal. Across the midfoot, the tarsal region sits proximal to the metatarsals and distal to the ankle, framing the general contour of the pes. That anterior-facing dorsal orientation matters when you need to teach surface anatomy and bony alignment of the forefoot, because toe deviation and metatarsal splay are judged in relation to the longitudinal axis of the foot and the position of the hallux. Hallux valgus at the first metatarsophalangeal joint and tailor’s bunion at the fifth metatarsal head are assessed from this aspect, and the visible arch profile also supports discussions of pes planus versus pes cavus in gait and footwear-related overuse complaints. Small changes in toe cascade are diagnostic.
