Description

Anterior surface anatomy of the adult male thorax is presented with the sternum in the midline and the paired pectoral regions extending laterally to the anterior axillary folds. Superiorly, the suprasternal (jugular) notch and clavicular contours frame the thoracic inlet; inferiorly, the costal margins sweep inferolaterally to meet at the infrasternal (subcostal) angle over the xiphoid process. The nipples and areolae provide bilateral landmarks on the anterior chest wall, positioned lateral to the sternal border and superior to the costal margin. Clinically, these external reference points anchor chest examination and bedside procedures: you palpate the sternal angle (Angle of Louis) to identify the 2nd costal cartilage and then count ribs and intercostal spaces for auscultation, thoracentesis, or chest drain placement. The costal margin and infrasternal angle also guide interpretation of hyperinflation in COPD and help localize upper abdominal versus lower thoracic pain, where diaphragmatic irritation can refer discomfort to the shoulder via the phrenic nerve. Clear midline definition matters. It reduces left-right ambiguity when teaching surface projection of the heart, lungs, and pleura.
