Description
Frontal exposure of the male face and upper neck reveals the facial expression musculature arranged around the orbital, nasal, and oral apertures, including orbicularis oculi, zygomaticus major and minor, levator labii superioris, buccinator, orbicularis oris, depressor anguli oris, and mentalis. Laterally, the masseter occupies the ramus of the mandible with temporalis tendon coursing deep toward the coronoid process, while the platysma forms a thin superficial sheet over the anterolateral neck. Yellow nerve branches radiate from the parotid region across the cheek and perioral region, consistent with the facial nerve (CN VII) temporal, zygomatic, buccal, marginal mandibular, and cervical branches, with sensory territories suggested along the infraorbital and mental regions overlying the maxilla and mandible. No skin distracts from the fascia, myofiber direction, and axonal branching. Clear landmarks. Facial nerve topography matters when you are planning incisions, raising skin flaps, or interpreting facial weakness, because the motor branches travel superficially across the masseter and buccinator and become vulnerable during parotidectomy, rhytidectomy, and repair of mandibular angle trauma. The same anterior mapping also supports bedside localization in Bell palsy versus central facial paresis, and it pairs naturally with trigeminal (CN V) sensory distributions when assessing numbness after maxillary fractures or dental procedures involving the infraorbital or mental nerves. Useful for gross anatomy and head and neck courses, as well as surgical anatomy figures in otolaryngology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, and neurology teaching files that need an uncluttered anterior view of facial muscles and their innervation over the cranium and maxilla.
