Description
Visible beneath a semi-transparent male anterior neck skin overlay, the paired sternohyoid muscles form the medial strap of the infrahyoid group, running vertically from the posterior surface of the manubrium and medial clavicle to the inferior border of the hyoid bone. Lateral to them, the sternocleidomastoid courses obliquely from the mastoid process toward the sternum and clavicle, framing the anterior cervical region. Superficial chest anatomy continues inferiorly with the pectoralis major overlying the anterior thoracic wall, while the common carotid arteries ascend on each side in red and the internal jugular veins descend in blue within the expected carotid sheath corridor, deep to the sternocleidomastoid and lateral to the strap muscles. Midline orientation is clear. For operative anatomy, this anterior presentation matters because the sternohyoid and its companion sternothyroid overlie the thyroid gland, larynx, and upper trachea, and are routinely separated or retracted during thyroidectomy and midline airway access. Small decisions in dissection follow these planes, since staying medial between the strap muscles reduces risk to the carotid sheath contents, while lateral retraction increases exposure but brings the internal jugular vein and vagus nerve region into play. Clean strap muscle identification also supports teaching of hyolaryngeal depression, relevant in dysphagia evaluation and in post-intubation or post-surgical anterior neck pain. A practical landmark. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and head and neck modules to anchor the infrahyoid layer before introducing deeper visceral compartments, or in surgical education materials outlining the approach for tracheostomy, thyroid surgery, and central venous access in the lower neck.
