Description
Framed by the anterior and posterior bellies of the digastric muscle and the inferior border of the mandible, the submandibular triangle is presented from an anterior neck perspective in a female subject. The submandibular gland occupies much of the triangle, with the mylohyoid forming the muscular floor and the hyoglossus and middle pharyngeal constrictor lying deeper and more posterior. Medial to the gland, the hyoid bone sits inferiorly in the midline, while the facial artery and vein course at the superior margin near the mandibular body. Small but teachable structures, the submandibular lymph nodes typically lie superficial to the gland along the fascial planes. This regional anatomy matters because the submandibular triangle is a frequent site of sialadenitis and sialolithiasis, and you need a clear mental map of the gland relative to the mylohyoid when tracing the path of a stone toward Wharton duct in the floor of mouth. Surgeons also rely on these relationships during submandibular gland excision and level I neck dissection, where the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve is at risk near the inferior border of the mandible and the facial vessels can tether the superior aspect of the gland.
