Description
Emerging beneath a superiorly placed placenta, the conceptus at gestational week 20 to 21 is rendered in a flexed fetal posture, with the head relatively large compared with the trunk and the hips and knees drawn toward the abdomen. Limb segmentation is clear, with elbows and knees flexed, hands and feet positioned near the midline, and facial contours defined along the anterior aspect of the head. Week 20 is a practical milestone in obstetric imaging because it aligns with the standard mid-trimester anatomy scan, when overall proportions, limb formation, and placental location are evaluated together rather than in isolation. The relationship of the cord insertion to the placental disc is central to discussions of velamentous or marginal insertion and vasa previa, while the placental position itself frames clinical teaching around placenta previa and low-lying placenta.
