Description
Centered within the uterine cavity, a 22 week human fetus lies in a flexed, curled posture with the head proportionally prominent and the trunk arcing along a clearly defined vertebral column. Upper limbs are brought toward the thorax, and the hips and knees remain flexed, keeping the distal extremities close to the abdominal wall. The umbilical cord inserts at the anterior abdominal wall at the umbilicus and courses to the chorionic plate of the placenta, which sits apposed to the endometrial surface and frames the intrauterine environment in red tones. At this gestational week, gross fetal proportions and the fetoplacental unit are often correlated with the standard mid pregnancy anatomy ultrasound, when biometric measurements such as biparietal diameter, head circumference, abdominal circumference, and femur length guide dating and growth assessment. Placental location and cord insertion matter here; a low lying placenta, placenta previa, velamentous cord insertion, or vasa previa can change both surveillance and delivery planning, and these relationships are hard to teach without a clear spatial reference. The flexed fetal posture also mirrors what clinicians encounter when interpreting fetal lie and presentation as pregnancy progresses. Clear landmarks.
