Description
Posterior brachial anatomy is presented with the triceps brachii forming the dominant superficial contour, its long head positioned medially between the teres minor superiorly and the latissimus dorsi and teres major inferiorly as it descends toward the olecranon. Laterally, the lateral head of triceps sweeps along the posterolateral humerus, while the medial head becomes more apparent distally near the tendon. The posterior humeral shaft sits deep to the muscle mass, and the triangular interval between teres major, long head of triceps, and humerus marks the route of the radial nerve and profunda brachii artery into the posterior compartment. This posterior perspective matters when you need to relate surface form to deep neurovascular risk: the radial nerve winds in the radial groove on the posterior humerus, so midshaft humeral fractures and posterior plating approaches can endanger it, producing wrist drop and sensory loss over the dorsum of the hand. Elbow extension strength testing also traces back to these triceps heads and their common tendon, and distal triceps tendon rupture at the olecranon can be discussed cleanly from this orientation. The long head’s scapular origin adds a shoulder component that is easy to miss in anterior-only teaching.
