Description
Running obliquely along the anterolateral neck, the sternocleidomastoid muscle belly is shown extending from the mastoid process of the temporal bone to its inferior attachments on the manubrium sterni (sternal head) and medial clavicle (clavicular head). Superiorly, the muscle frames the region just inferior and anterior to the ear, while inferiorly it defines a prominent surface landmark over the suprasternal notch and medial clavicle. Its anterior border lies adjacent to the anterior triangle of the neck, and its posterior border helps define the posterior triangle, with the muscle forming a clear partition between these two clinically used surface regions. On profile, the muscle’s superficial course emphasizes its role as a palpable guide from the mastoid tip down toward the sternoclavicular region. Surface anatomy of the sternocleidomastoid matters because many high-yield structures live immediately deep to it, and the muscle’s borders are used at the bedside to localize them. The carotid sheath, containing the common carotid artery, internal jugular vein, and vagus nerve, runs deep to the sternocleidomastoid, and clinicians often reference the anterior border when describing carotid pulse palpation or planning incisions for carotid endarterectomy. Torticolis commonly presents with a shortened or spasmodic sternocleidomastoid causing ipsilateral head tilt and contralateral chin rotation, and this profile view supports teaching the muscle’s line of pull and resulting posture.
