Description
Centered on the parietal region of the female head, the parietal bone occupies the superolateral cranium between the frontal bone anteriorly and the occipital bone posteriorly, meeting them at the coronal and lambdoid sutures while approaching the sagittal suture at the midline near the vertex. Inferiorly, the parietal bone overlaps the squamous part of the temporal bone at the squamous suture, with the superior temporal line arcing posteriorly as a surface landmark for temporalis fascia attachment. The parietal eminence (tuber parietale) provides a palpable prominence. Bony intersections such as the pterion (anteroinferior) and asterion (posteroinferior) logically sit at the margins of this field. Clinically, the parietal region is a common site for blunt head trauma and scalp lacerations, and it matters because superficial landmarks map directly to fracture patterns and intracranial risk. The pterion is the classic weak point, where a lateral impact can fracture thin bone and lacerate the anterior branch of the middle meningeal artery, producing an epidural hematoma with rapid neurologic deterioration. Surgeons also reference the superior temporal line and parietal eminence when planning temporoparietal craniotomies or placing burr holes to avoid the temporal fossa and to approximate the underlying central sulcus and parietal lobe surface anatomy.
