Description
Anterior cross section through the right atrium exposes the smooth posterior wall, the sinus venarum cavarum, positioned posterior to the pectinate muscle region and separated from it by the crista terminalis. Superiorly, the lumen of the superior vena cava opens into this smooth-walled chamber, while the inferior vena cava enters inferiorly; the interatrial septum forms the medial boundary. A broad, uninterrupted endocardial surface dominates. Venous inflow is the organizing feature. Clinically, this cut clarifies where atrial incisions and cannulation land during cardiopulmonary bypass, since the caval orifices and their junction with the right atrium sit in the sinus venarum rather than in the trabeculated auricular portion. The relationship to the crista terminalis matters in electrophysiology: the sinoatrial node lies at the superior end of this ridge near the SVC-atrial junction, and atrial flutter circuits often track along the right atrial free wall with landmarks defined by this smooth-to-trabeculated transition.
