Description

Running from the anterior superior iliac spine to the dorsum of the toes, the anterior female lower extremity is presented with clear surface anatomy across the hip, thigh, leg, and foot. Proximally, the inguinal region and femoral triangle lie inferior to the anterior pelvis, with the sartorius forming the lateral border and adductor longus defining the medial boundary overlying the femoral vessels and femoral nerve. Distally, the quadriceps femoris mass tapers to the patella and patellar ligament at the anterior knee, then continues as the tibial crest and anterior border of the tibia toward the medial and lateral malleoli, ending in the extensor tendons crossing the ankle onto the dorsum of the foot. Anterior landmarks drive a lot of practical anatomy. Palpation of the femoral pulse just inferior to the inguinal ligament and medial to the sartorius is routine for trauma and vascular assessment, and the same corridor is used for arterial access and for understanding femoral hernia anatomy, where the hernia sac passes medial to the femoral vein beneath the ligament. At the knee, the relationship of quadriceps tendon, patella, and patellar ligament maps directly to the patellar reflex and to common injury patterns, including patellar dislocation (often lateral) and patellar tendinopathy at the inferior pole.
