Description
Palmar anatomy of the female metacarpal region is presented from an anterior (volar) perspective, centered on the metacarpus between the distal carpal row proximally and the metacarpophalangeal joints distally. The shafts and heads of metacarpals I to V form the bony framework deep to the palmar aponeurosis, with the thenar eminence positioned radially and the hypothenar eminence ulnarly. Distal to the metacarpal heads, the palmar digital creases mark the transition into the digits, while the central palm aligns over the third metacarpal as a midline reference. Surface landmarks of the palm map cleanly onto the underlying metacarpals. For teaching and clinical communication, an anterior depiction of the metacarpus matters because it matches the working view of the hand during examination, splinting, and palmar surgical exposures. The relationship of the metacarpal heads to the palmar skin creases helps localize metacarpal neck fractures (classically the fifth metacarpal boxer’s fracture) and guides reduction assessment by comparing knuckle prominence and rotational alignment during finger flexion. Palmar fascial context also sets the stage for discussions of Dupuytren disease, where cords in the palmar aponeurosis can tether the digits despite intact metacarpal anatomy.
