Description
Anterior inspection centers on the gallbladder neck (collum vesicae biliaris), the tapered segment that continues inferiorly and medially into the cystic duct. The fundus lies more inferior and anterior against the visceral surface of the liver, while the body (corpus) expands proximally between fundus and neck, with the neck angling toward the porta hepatis. Medial to the neck, the cystic duct course anticipates its junction with the common hepatic duct to form the common bile duct, and the peritoneal reflections around the infundibulum outline the surgical planes of the hepatocystic triangle. Short and narrow. Orientation of the gallbladder base and neck matters because this is where gallstone disease most often declares itself clinically, with calculi lodging at the neck or cystic duct and producing acute cholecystitis or biliary colic. An anterior view also supports safe cholecystectomy teaching by reinforcing the relationship of the neck and cystic duct to Calot’s triangle, where the cystic artery and aberrant right hepatic duct variants can sit uncomfortably close. A common pitfall is mistaking an inflamed, foreshortened cystic duct for the common bile duct.
