Description
Rotating through a lateral view of the talus, the animation centers on the anterior calcaneal facet on the inferior aspect of the talar head, just anterior to the posterior calcaneal facet and separated from it by the sulcus tali. As the sequence settles, the smooth articular surface is read in context with the talar neck and body posteriorly, and with the trochlea tali positioned superiorly for the tibial plafond. Subtle changes in angle help distinguish the anterior facet from the adjacent medial and lateral talocalcaneal articular contours and from the nonarticular cortical margins of the head. Attention to this small facet pays off when teaching subtalar joint mechanics and the geometry of the tarsal sinus. Coalition and degenerative change at the talocalcaneal interface can alter subtalar motion, and the anterior facet is one of the regions scrutinized on CT when pain localizes to the lateral hindfoot or when planning resection of a talocalcaneal coalition. Motion clarifies what static plates often blur, the facet’s orientation relative to the sulcus tali and how that relationship frames the interosseous talocalcaneal ligament and the sinus tarsi corridor. Small surface, big consequences. Use it in gross anatomy labs and musculoskeletal modules to anchor discussions of the subtalar joint, and in orthopaedic or radiology teaching files when correlating oblique CT reconstructions with true lateral osteology. The clean lateral perspective also supports textbook figures on hindfoot arthrodesis planning and arthroscopy portals around the sinus tarsi. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
