Description
Anterior to the thorax, the precordium is outlined as the region of the male chest wall that overlies the heart, spanning the parasternal area and extending inferolaterally toward the cardiac apex. The sternum and adjacent costal cartilages form the medial boundary, while the left anterior chest wall over the fourth to sixth intercostal spaces frames the typical surface projection of the left ventricle. Inferiorly the region approaches the xiphisternal area, and laterally it trends toward the left midclavicular line where the apex beat is classically localized. Surface anatomy drives the composition. Clinical correlation is direct: palpation for the point of maximal impulse (PMI) is performed in the left fifth intercostal space at or near the midclavicular line, and a displaced PMI can suggest left ventricular dilation or hyperinflated lungs. Auscultation landmarks cluster around this same zone, with the mitral area near the apex and the tricuspid area along the lower left sternal border, so a clear precordial map helps separate murmurs from transmitted sounds. In trauma and emergency care, this surface region also defines where precordial ecchymosis, sternal tenderness, or a pericardial tamponade concern prompts focused cardiac evaluation.
