Description

Oriented in an anterior sectional plane, the inlet portion of the right ventricle is exposed immediately deep to the anterior chest wall, with the tricuspid valve forming the superior boundary between right atrium and right ventricle. The tricuspid annulus frames the right atrioventricular orifice, while the anterior, posterior, and septal cusps project inferiorly into the ventricular cavity, tethered by chordae tendineae to papillary muscles arising from the ventricular free wall and interventricular septum. Medially, the inlet lies adjacent to the membranous septum and septal leaflet attachments, and laterally it expands toward the right ventricular free wall, where trabeculation increases as the chamber transitions away from the valve. Spatially, this region sits inferior to the atrium and anterior to the left-sided inflow structures. Focusing on the right ventricle inlet matters because it is where functional tricuspid regurgitation declares itself, at the level of annular dilation and leaflet tethering, often in the setting of right ventricular enlargement or pulmonary hypertension. Surgeons and interventional teams think in these terms when planning tricuspid annuloplasty or transcatheter edge-to-edge repair, and when avoiding conduction tissue near the septal leaflet and membranous septum. A clear anterior cut also supports correlation with echocardiography, since leaflet coaptation, chordal insertion, and annular geometry drive what you measure on apical four-chamber and right ventricular inflow views. Small structures, big consequences. Use this artwork in cardiovascular anatomy and physiology teaching to distinguish the inlet from the trabeculated apical region and the outflow (infundibulum), or in cardiology and cardiac surgery texts discussing tricuspid valve disease, right-sided heart failure, and procedural planning. It also fits clinical handouts and conference slides that pair sectional anatomy with echo findings and intraoperative orientation. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
