Description

Centered on the anterior chest, the clavicle forms the superior boundary of the infraclavicular fossa (subclavicular fossa, Mohrenheim fossa), a shallow triangular depression just inferior to its middle third. Medially, the contour trends toward the sternoclavicular region and the clavicular head of pectoralis major; laterally, it tapers toward the deltopectoral triangle where the anterior border of deltoid meets pectoralis major. The surface hollow lies superficial to the clavipectoral fascia and pectoralis minor, with the coracoid process positioned deep and slightly lateral to the fossa. Clinically, this area functions as a surface landmark for infraclavicular vascular access and regional anesthesia. The axillary vein becomes the subclavian vein at the lateral border of the first rib, and the cords of the brachial plexus cluster around the second part of the axillary artery deep to pectoralis minor, relationships that inform the infraclavicular brachial plexus block and help avoid pleural puncture. Landmarks matter here. The deltopectoral groove adjacent to the fossa also guides the cephalic vein cutdown and the deltopectoral approach used in shoulder surgery and fracture fixation.
