Description
Running obliquely along the anterolateral neck, the sternocleidomastoid forms a prominent strap from its superior attachment at the mastoid process and lateral superior nuchal line down to the manubrium sterni (sternal head) and the medial clavicle (clavicular head). Anterior to its border, the infrahyoid contour and the midline cervical region align with the laryngeal framework, while posterior to it the lateral neck surface falls away toward the posterior triangle. Superiorly, the muscle frames the angle of the mandible and the parotid-mastoid region; inferiorly, its two heads diverge slightly as they approach the sternoclavicular area, defining a shallow supraclavicular fossa. Clinically, the sternocleidomastoid is a primary landmark for dividing the neck into anterior and posterior cervical triangles, which guides palpation of cervical lymph node levels and planning of incision placement. Its anterior border helps orient central venous access, since the internal jugular vein typically lies deep to the muscle within the carotid sheath, while the external jugular vein often crosses the muscle superficially toward the subclavian vein. Torticollis and post-traumatic muscle spasm commonly produce the characteristic head tilt and contralateral chin rotation that this anatomy explains. Use this view for teaching surface anatomy of the male neck in gross anatomy and head and neck examination labs, and for illustrating procedural landmarks in clinical skills manuals covering internal jugular cannulation, cervical lymph node assessment, and anterior neck approaches. It also fits well in patient-education handouts discussing sternocleidomastoid strain, whiplash-related pain patterns, or congenital muscular torticollis.
