Across the anterior male neck, the suprahyoid region is centered superior to the hyoid bone and inferior to the mandibular body. The anterior bellies of the digastric muscles run inferomedially from the mandible toward the intermediate tendons near the hyoid, defining the lateral borders of the submental triangle, while the stylohyoid courses posteroinferiorly and closely parallels the posterior belly of the digastric before splitting around the digastric tendon. Midline structures logically included in this field include the mylohyoid forming the muscular floor of the mouth, with the geniohyoid immediately superior to it and the hyoid and its greater horns sitting inferior to the mandibular symphysis. Small but teachable landmarks. An anterior view of the suprahyoid compartment matters because these muscles set the surgical map for the submandibular and submental spaces and for the superior extent of many anterior neck dissections. Deep neck infections that track into the submandibular space, ranulas extending from the sublingual gland, and sialadenitis with submandibular gland enlargement are all interpreted relative to the mylohyoid sling and the digastric borders, and ultrasound-guided aspiration or incision planning often references the digastric and hyoid as consistent surface-proximal cues. The same relationships also anchor teaching of suprahyoid action in swallowing and airway protection.
