Pleomorphic corynebacteria appear as club-shaped, Gram-positive rods with uneven caliber, some lying singly and others arranged in angular pairs and short palisades. Cell-to-cell variation in length and thickness is evident, producing the familiar V- and L-shaped groupings created by snapping division. Metachromatic (volutin) granules may be suggested at the poles, with a beaded appearance along the bacillary body.
