Description
From a lateral neck perspective, the animation centers on two adjacent cervical vertebral bodies separated by an intervertebral disc space, then transitions to a disc replacement implant seated between their inferior and superior endplates. The anterior margins of the vertebral bodies define the surgical corridor, while the posterior vertebral line and spinal canal lie immediately posterior to the disc space. As the sequence advances, the native disc is removed and the implant is introduced in-line with the disc space, maintaining midline alignment relative to the vertebral bodies and preserving height between the superior and inferior endplates. Motion is shown stepwise, from disc space preparation through final implant positioning. Cervical disc arthroplasty is commonly performed for symptomatic cervical radiculopathy or myelopathy from degenerative disc disease when motion preservation is preferred over anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). Seeing the implant advance under a true lateral trajectory clarifies how endplate preparation, implant sizing, and depth control aim to avoid over-distraction and to limit posterior encroachment toward the spinal canal, an error that can worsen neurologic compression. The sequential placement also helps distinguish intended motion preservation at the operated level from fusion constructs, where segmental mobility is eliminated.
