Description
Rod-shaped Gram-positive bacteria consistent with Lactobacillus (lactobacilli) appear as elongated bacilli with blunt ends, scattered singly and in short chains against a dark field. Individual cells sit in loose, irregular clusters rather than an organized biofilm, with occasional parallel alignment where adjacent rods lie in close apposition. The purple hue suggests retention of crystal violet on light microscopy, a typical appearance for Lactobacillus on Gram stain preparations from culture or clinical swabs. Scale is microanatomical. No host tissue is present. Lactobacillus matters because it is one of the dominant bacterial genera in the healthy vagina, where lactic acid production supports a low pH and suppresses overgrowth of anaerobes associated with bacterial vaginosis. Seeing rod-dominant flora helps learners contrast normal Lactobacillus-predominant smears with clue cell rich BV specimens, and it also frames practical issues such as false assumptions that any Gram-positive rod indicates contamination. In the lab, morphology alone cannot separate Lactobacillus from other Gram-positive bacilli, so this view pairs well with discussions of catalase testing, colony morphology on agar, and the clinical context of the specimen source. A good teaching point.
