Treponema pallidum spirochetes appear in close-up as slender, tightly coiled helices arranged in overlapping and intertwined bundles against a granular substrate. Each organism reads as a fine, hair-like filament with regular spiral turns along its long axis, the coils running continuously from one end to the other. Several treponemes cross one another at oblique angles, giving a clear sense of relative orientation and the sinuous profile typical of spirochete bacteria. Color enhancement renders the organisms bright green against a purple background for edge definition rather than histologic staining.
