Description
Colored segmentation highlights the lingula of the left lung on an inferior, left-sided perspective, emphasizing the relationship of the lingular segments to the cardiac impression on the anteromedial surface. Segmentum lingulare superius lies superior and slightly anterior to segmentum lingulare inferius, both projecting from the superior lobe and wrapping toward the mediastinal attachment. Medially, the hilum region and pleural reflections toward the mediastinum sit closest to the colored basal field, while the lateral costal surface sweeps outward and posteriorly. Clinically, the lingula behaves like the right middle lobe, a small, gravity-dependent territory with a tendency toward atelectasis and post-obstructive change when mucus clearance is impaired. This angle helps when you are teaching bronchopulmonary segments for bronchoscopy or VATS planning, because the lingular bronchus (B4 and B5) and its segmental boundaries can be mentally mapped to where opacities collect along the left heart border on a frontal chest radiograph. Poorly localized left-sided “middle lobe” syndromes often live here. Small area, big diagnostic consequence.
