Description
Viewed in lateral profile, the male mentum forms the anterior-inferior contour of the lower face where the mandibular symphysis thickens into the mental protuberance. The mental tubercles sit inferolateral to the protuberance and blend posteriorly into the body of the mandible as it continues toward the gonial region. Superior to this bony prominence, the soft-tissue chin pad overlies the anterior mandible, with the lower lip positioned anterosuperior to the mentolabial sulcus and the submental region tapering posteroinferiorly toward the suprahyoid neck. Lateral configuration of the mental region matters because small changes in bony projection and soft-tissue thickness alter facial profile, occlusal planning, and airway-related head and neck assessments. This is the working view for genioplasty and chin implant planning, where you judge anterior projection and vertical height while keeping the mental foramen and mental nerve (typically on the anterolateral mandible near the second premolar region) in mind during subperiosteal dissection.
