Description

Presented in partial anterior aspect, the adult female superficial anatomy is organized around the midline landmarks of the suprasternal (jugular) notch, manubrium and body of the sternum, and the linea alba descending toward the umbilicus. Laterally, the clavicles sweep to the acromia, framing the anterior axillary folds and the contour of the pectoral region beneath the breasts, with the costal margins and subcostal angle defining the inferior thoracic aperture. Inferior to the abdomen, the iliac crests and anterior superior iliac spines establish the pelvic width, and the proximal thighs continue distally with the patellar region positioned anterior to the femoral condyles. Surface anatomy of the female trunk matters because clinical localization often starts here, before imaging or incision. Palpation of the sternal angle (Angle of Louis) helps you count ribs and map heart valves, while the breast footprint overlying ribs 2 to 6 and the anterior axillary line guides physical examination, screening mammography positioning, and surgical planning for lumpectomy or mastectomy with sentinel lymph node biopsy. The umbilicus and anterior superior iliac spine also anchor common entry sites for laparoscopy and help describe abdominal wall hernias and rectus diastasis in a way that is reproducible between clinicians. Landmarks rule the exam. Use this illustration for teaching gross anatomy and surface anatomy in preclinical curricula, for figure panels in nursing and physical therapy manuals on inspection and palpation, or as clean reference art for patient-facing materials describing breast and abdominal procedures.
