Shown in lateral profile, the adult female abdominal wall is organized from the costal margin superiorly to the iliac crest and pubic region inferiorly, with the external oblique superficial and its fibers running inferomedially toward the linea alba. Deep to it, the internal oblique and transversus abdominis form layered sheets that blend into the rectus sheath around rectus abdominis, while the semilunar line arcs along the lateral border of the rectus. Posteriorly, the lumbar paraspinal region and lower ribs frame the flank, and the inguinal ligament spans from the anterior superior iliac spine toward the pubic tubercle.
