Description

Running inferior to the clavicle, the deltopectoral triangle is defined laterally by the anterior border of the deltoid muscle and medially by the clavicular head of pectoralis major, with its superior margin at the clavicle near the acromioclavicular region. Along the floor, clavipectoral fascia spans deep to both muscles, overlying subclavius and pectoralis minor as it descends toward the axilla. The cephalic vein occupies the deltopectoral groove and typically pierces the clavipectoral fascia to join the axillary vein, while small deltopectoral lymph nodes and branches of the thoracoacromial artery cluster around the same interval. Clear landmarks. Clinically, this anterior shoulder and upper chest corridor matters because it provides a reliable superficial route to the axillary vein and proximal humeral region when the deltoid and pectoralis major are separated rather than transected. The deltopectoral approach is standard for open reduction and internal fixation of proximal humerus fractures and for shoulder arthroplasty, and the cephalic vein is often preserved or mobilized during these exposures to reduce bleeding and maintain venous access. Familiarity with the clavipectoral fascia also helps explain why the thoracoacromial vessels can bleed briskly when the fascia is opened and why infraclavicular spread of infection or hematoma can track along fascial planes. Use this artwork for gross anatomy teaching of the pectoral region and axilla, surgical training materials covering shoulder arthroplasty or proximal humerus fixation, and medical publishing projects that need accurate surface-to-deep correlation in an adult female. It also supports patient-facing diagrams for central venous access, pacemaker or ICD lead pathways, and infraclavicular incisions that reference the cephalic vein and deltopectoral groove. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
