Description
Lateral soft tissue and bony landmarks of the female temporal (temple) region are organized around the pterion, where the frontal, parietal, squamous temporal, and greater wing of the sphenoid meet. Superficially, the skin and subcutaneous fat contour over the temporal fossa, with the superficial temporal artery and vein coursing superiorly anterior to the auricle, accompanied by the auriculotemporal nerve. Deep to the temporoparietal fascia lies the temporalis fascia, investing the temporalis muscle as it fans inferiorly to pass deep to the zygomatic arch toward its insertion on the coronoid process of the mandible. Clinically, the pterion is a thin calvarial zone and a frequent site of traumatic fracture, where a blow can tear the anterior branch of the middle meningeal artery and precipitate an epidural hematoma with rapid neurologic decline. Small distances matter here. The same layered anatomy guides safe planes for temporal fossa approaches and cosmetic injection: staying superficial to the deep temporal fascia reduces risk to the deep temporal vessels, while awareness of the superficial temporal artery helps avoid hematoma or inadvertent intra-arterial injection. Temporal region asymmetry and subtle curvature are also evaluated in temporalis muscle hypertrophy, postoperative temporal hollowing, and reconstructive planning.
