Description
Anterior thoracic wall anatomy is presented with the pectoralis major forming the broad superficial sheet of the pectoral region, its clavicular head lying superior to the sternocostal fibers as they converge laterally toward the humerus. Deep to it, the pectoralis minor runs from the anterior ribs (classically ribs 3 to 5) superolaterally to the coracoid process, separated from the overlying muscle by pectoral fascia and the clavipectoral fascia. Medially, the sternal border and parasternal region define the medial attachment zone, while the anterior axillary fold marks the inferolateral margin of the chest. This anterior assessment matters because the pectoral fascia and clavipectoral fascia define tissue planes that surgeons follow in mastectomy and axillary procedures, and they influence how fluid, infection, or hematoma can track between the breast (mammary) tissue and the chest wall. Injury patterns also make sense from this view: tears of the pectoralis major often occur near the humeral insertion during bench press, producing a visible contour defect at the anterior axillary fold and loss of adduction and internal rotation strength. A clean landmark set. Use it in gross anatomy and surface anatomy teaching to orient students to male breast topography, anterior axillary fold boundaries, and the relationship of pectoralis minor to the coracoid process for clinical exam and procedural positioning.
