Description
Presented in an anterior cross-section, the adult female urinary bladder is opened to the lumen so the mucosa, rugae, and detrusor muscle can be read as layered walls from superficial to deep. A polypoid lesion projects from the urothelial lining into the bladder cavity, rising medial to the lateral bladder walls and superior to the bladder neck region. Inferiorly, the bladder narrows toward the internal urethral orifice and proximal urethra, while the trigone is implied at the posteroinferior base between the expected locations of the ureteric orifices. Anterior relationships are oriented toward the retropubic space and pubic symphysis, with posterior pelvic organs (uterus and anterior vaginal wall) lying behind the bladder in typical female pelvic anatomy. Polyp and polyposis terminology matters in the bladder because a smooth, pedunculated mucosal mass can mimic urothelial carcinoma on presentation (often painless gross hematuria) yet behave differently in management and surveillance. Cystoscopy correlates directly with this cutaway view, and the depiction of the polyp’s attachment site helps frame why biopsy or transurethral resection targets the stalk or base to assess invasion into lamina propria or detrusor. Location also matters: lesions near the trigone raise practical concerns about ureteric orifice proximity and postoperative obstruction, while those near the bladder neck can contribute to irritative voiding symptoms.
