Description

Renal parenchyma is presented in transverse section, with the superficial renal cortex forming the outer rim deep to the fibrous capsule and surrounding the darker, deeper renal medulla. Within the cortex, the cortical labyrinth occupies most of the thickness and contains renal corpuscles (glomeruli with Bowman capsule) and convoluted tubules, while medullary rays extend radially inward toward the bases of the medullary pyramids. Arcuate vessels are expected at the corticomedullary junction, running parallel to the kidney surface, with cortical radial (interlobular) arteries and veins projecting superiorly toward the capsule between lobules. Orientation is clean. This sectional relationship between cortex and medulla matters when you need to explain why cortical perfusion drops early in shock and why the outer layer is the primary site of many immune and microvascular injuries. The view also supports pathologic correlation in acute cortical necrosis, cortical scarring from chronic pyelonephritis, and the cortical thinning seen in reflux nephropathy or longstanding obstructive uropathy, where the medulla may be relatively preserved until later stages. For biopsy teaching, it reinforces why an adequate renal core must include cortex, because glomerular diseases (for example IgA nephropathy or membranous nephropathy) localize to the renal corpuscles concentrated in the cortical labyrinth. Use this illustration in renal histology and gross anatomy courses to bridge nephron microanatomy with the macroscopic corticomedullary architecture, and in nephrology or pathology publications discussing cortical injury patterns, biopsy adequacy, or corticomedullary differentiation on imaging. It also fits surgical and interventional training materials for percutaneous renal biopsy planning and for explaining why subcapsular hematoma threatens cortical tissue first.
