Rendered as a magnified flavivirus virion, the particle is spherical and enveloped, with a lipid bilayer studded by repeating envelope (E) glycoprotein ridges that read as surface spikes at this scale. Beneath the envelope, membrane (M) protein sits close to the bilayer, while the capsid (C) protein forms the internal nucleocapsid around the positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome. Symmetry dominates the surface: E proteins pack in an ordered, quasi-icosahedral array, creating alternating grooves and crests that run tangentially around the particle. Color is used to separate topography rather than anatomy. Scale matters. For dengue virus, these E protein surfaces are where receptor attachment, endosomal fusion, and most neutralizing antibody binding occur, so the geometry directly relates to serotype-specific immunity and vaccine design. The same architecture also explains clinically familiar problems: cross-reactive but non-neutralizing antibodies can enhance infection in subsequent dengue exposures (antibody-dependent enhancement), and flaviviruses such as Zika share enough E protein homology that serology can be difficult to interpret without confirmatory neutralization testing.
