Description
Arising as the dome-shaped superior pole of the uterus, the uterine fundus sits above the entrances of the uterine tubes and continues inferiorly into the uterine body. A thick myometrium forms the bulk of the wall, with the endometrium lining the uterine cavity on the deep surface and the perimetrium investing it externally. Laterally, the fundal contour blends toward the uterine cornua, where the tubal ostia open, while the midline apex marks the most superior point in anatomical position. Muscle dominates this region. Clinically, fundal anatomy is the reference for obstetric examination, since fundal height tracks uterine enlargement across gestation and helps flag growth restriction, polyhydramnios, or malpresentation when the measurement and dates diverge. The fundus also matters in surgical and postpartum settings: uterine atony often begins as a poorly contracted fundus, and bimanual uterine massage targets this thick myometrium to reduce hemorrhage. During cesarean delivery, the relationship of the fundus to the uterine body frames where the hysterotomy is placed and why fundal incisions carry higher bleeding risk. Use this render for gross anatomy and reproductive system teaching when you need a clean depiction of myometrial thickness and the fundus-to-body transition, or for obstetrics and gynecology materials discussing fundal assessment, uterine tone, and the cornu as a landmark for tubal anatomy. It also fits patient education pieces that need a precise visual of the womb’s superior contour without distracting pelvic organs. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
