Description
Seen from the dorsal aspect, the five digits of the male foot (digiti pedis I to V) are rendered from the hallux on the medial side to the fifth toe laterally, with the toenail plates and nail beds centered on the distal phalanges. The proximal phalanges lie closest to the metatarsophalangeal joints, while the middle and distal phalanges step distally in the lesser toes, and the hallux terminates in a single distal phalanx. Dorsal skin contours and periungual folds define the extensor surface, with the toes aligned in typical sagittal plane orientation and slight natural abduction from the second through fifth digits. A dorsal digit view matters because it is where clinicians document many surface findings that correlate with deeper mechanics, from mallet and hammer toe deformities to extensor tendon imbalance at the proximal interphalangeal joints. Nail apparatus anatomy is also a frequent focus in practice, including onychocryptosis, subungual hematoma after trauma, onychomycosis patterns, and longitudinal melanonychia where the relationship of pigment to the nail plate and proximal nail fold can change management.
