Description
Surface anatomy of the female coxal region is rendered with emphasis on the external contour formed by the iliac crest superiorly, the anterosuperior iliac spine (ASIS) anterolaterally, and the greater trochanter of the femur laterally. The waist-to-hip transition reflects the lateral abdominal wall and the superior margin of the gluteal region, while the proximal thigh contour descends distal to the hip joint toward the tensor fasciae latae and iliotibial tract along the lateral aspect. Medially, the inguinal region and proximal adductor compartment define the anterior boundary between pelvis and thigh. Landmarks read cleanly. Such a contour-focused presentation matters when you need to connect palpation points to deeper structures around the hip. The ASIS and the line of the inguinal ligament guide surface estimation of the femoral neurovascular bundle and are also the reference for the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, a common site of entrapment in meralgia paresthetica. Laterally, the prominence of the greater trochanter relates directly to greater trochanteric pain syndrome (gluteus medius and minimus tendinopathy with trochanteric bursitis) and provides a dependable landmark for lateral hip examination and peri-trochanteric injections. Use this illustration in musculoskeletal anatomy and physical diagnosis courses to teach inspection and palpation of the hip region, or in orthopaedic and sports medicine materials discussing lateral hip pain, gait-related hip abductor pathology, and surface-guided procedures. It also supports plastic and reconstructive surgery publications addressing female hip and gluteal contour planning, where proportional relationships between iliac crest, trochanter, and upper thigh drive preoperative marking. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
