Description
Anterior and posterior contours of the female brachium are defined by the humerus centrally, with the deltoid forming a proximal lateral cap that blends into the anterior arm over the biceps brachii and into the posterior arm over the triceps brachii. Distally, the humeral epicondyles and supracondylar ridges create palpable landmarks flanking the elbow, while the bicipital groove and tendon trajectory toward the antecubital region help orient proximal to distal relationships. Medially, the intermuscular septa separate the anterior compartment from the posterior compartment and guide the course of the neurovascular bundles toward the cubital fossa. Surface anatomy stays readable. For teaching, the brachium is where students first learn to map compartments onto function and innervation, biceps brachii and brachialis for elbow flexion via the musculocutaneous nerve, triceps brachii for extension via the radial nerve, with the profunda brachii artery tracking in the radial groove where midshaft humeral fractures can produce radial nerve palsy and wrist drop. Surgical exposure also leans on these planes, from anterolateral approaches that split between brachialis and brachioradialis to posterior approaches that respect the triceps and the spiral course of the radial nerve.
