Description
Centered on the female labium superius oris (upper lip), the composition includes the cutaneous lip superiorly, the vermilion zone with its vermilion border, and the oral mucosa inferiorly, meeting at the mucocutaneous junction. Medially, the philtrum columns converge on the philtral dimple and outline the tubercle at the midline, while laterally the lip blends into the perioral skin at the oral commissures. Deep to the surface contours, the orbicularis oris forms the principal sphincteric muscle mass, interlacing with fibers of the levator labii superioris and zygomaticus muscles as they approach from superior and superolateral directions. For teaching and clinical communication, the upper lip is one of those small regions where millimeters matter, because alignment of the vermilion border, Cupid’s bow peaks, and philtral columns determines perceived symmetry after injury or surgery. Cleft lip repair, revision cheiloplasty, and traumatic laceration closure all depend on restoring orbicularis oris continuity and accurately re-approximating the mucocutaneous junction so that the scar does not migrate across the white roll.
