Description
Centered on the cubitus, the distal humerus articulates with the ulna and radius, with the trochlea seated medially against the ulnar trochlear notch and the capitulum positioned more laterally for the radial head. Bony landmarks frame the joint: the medial and lateral epicondyles sit proximal to the articular surface, while the olecranon projects posteriorly and the coronoid process rises anteriorly to define the margins of the trochlear notch. Superior to the articular block, the radial, coronoid, and olecranon fossae align with their corresponding ulnar and radial prominences during flexion and extension. Spatial relationships are clear. For teaching elbow mechanics, these landmarks matter because small shifts in congruency translate into large functional losses, and many common injuries are best understood as failures at specific contact points. Posterior elbow dislocation typically drives the ulna and radius posterior to the humeral trochlea and capitulum, often avulsing the coronoid process and stretching the collateral ligaments; correlating that pattern with the bony geometry makes reduction maneuvers and post-reduction stability testing easier to explain. Lateral epicondyle prominence also anchors the common extensor origin implicated in lateral epicondylitis, while the medial epicondyle provides orientation for cubital tunnel anatomy and ulnar nerve vulnerability during valgus stress and throwing.
